A New Year

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you've all had a good holiday season.

I'm still working on solidifying my resolutions. It seems as if every year I resolve to eat better, excercise more, and get more sleep, which I guess tells you how good I am at keeping resolutions. But then, I don't know how much worse shape I'd be in if I didn't make the annual resolutions, so I persist.

Another of my frequent resolutions is to try to relax more, but I'm usually even worese at keeping that one than the others.

I used to play the guitar when I was in high school, and I've long regretted letting it slide out of my life. I was never very good at it, since I have no ear for music, no sense of rhythm, and I'm as uncoordinated as hell (watching me try to play tennis has been known to reduce onlookers to hysterics). But it was fun, and when I recently expressed a wish to start up again, my daughter stole away my old guitar, had it refurbished and restrung, and presented it to me for Christmas. So for the past week I've been tormenting my family with my hesitant strumming and s-l-o-w picking, and having a giddy time.

Now, you might think spending all those hours turning my fingers into a bloody mess would detract from my writing schedule, but the funny thing is, since I've started playing, I find my productivity has soared. So this may be just what I needed.

How about you? Do you make resolutions? Are you better at keeping them than I am?

No resolutions, ever. It's the sure route to failure. Did you know that music playing is one of the few activities that engages both sides of the brain? No wonder your productivity has soared.

I realized about ten years ago that I never kept my resolutions so I quit making them. I now make some general "guidelines" for myself. :)

I make the same ones as you every year. i'm big on the familar. and figure if i keep trying - i cant get any worse! i also am very uncoordinated (i never walk and chew gum) and my sister says when i sing - it sounds like a dying animal. usually she refers to strangling a cat. good luck with your guitar playing - practice makes perfect and just realized we are that much closer to a new book!
all the best in 2013,
Ali

A new year means we're that much loser to the next Sebastian installment! (March, right?)

I don't make resolutions as they don't generally work for me and most days, I strive to eat well, get enough sleep, and do something physical each and every day. That said, this year, I am going to try and save more money and be more mindful of where my money goes.

Liz, that must explain it!

Charles, I like that idea! I may borrow it...

Ali, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's challenged! And I have a new book video I'll be putting up in a few days.

Courtney, March 5th! Sounds as if you Charles's "guidelines" approach.

Yes-I do try and follow "guidelines" like Charles does.

Happy New Year, and congratulations on getting back to your guitar playing!

I've been wondering whether to get a guitar and start playing again - I also played in high school but move around a lot, so am currently guitar-less - and reading your blog has convinced me that I should go for it.

So thank you! (Although my housemates might be slightly less pleased...)

Anon, I really am enjoying it. Perhaps because I'm older, I can simply accept that I'm never going to be as good as I'd like to be, and just do it for the fun of it.
